The Desiderata Poem: Go Placidy……

“Desiderata” is a poem which has always inspired me since I was old enough to understand the words and their relevance to life and our relationships with people. You know that feeling you get inside you when you are uplifted by something intensely beautiful and noble, or you are deeply disturbed by an event or a sad book or movie. Well that’s how it is with me in this instance. I’m into poetry as you know, and believe that poetry can be “the diary of your soul” because you release inhibitions and your inner secret self, as you pour all your feelings and emotions into verse.
The “real you” is always found in poetry, you can’t stop it and you can’t hide it. Apart from that, I have always thought of “Desiderata” as a prayer, like the Psalm 23. Both in my opinion, make you feel closer to God, even if you never think of yourself as being “special” or “holy”.
Anyway, “Desiderata” was written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann a lawyer of German (Bavarian) descent, who was born on September 26, 1872 and lived in Terre Haute, Indiana. He died on September 9, 1945, aged 72, and is buried at the Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
“Desiderata” derived from Latin, means “things desired”. I’m not sure what prompted him to compose this particular verse, maybe something very special happened to him. It seems he always wanted to be a writer and poet, but there always was a lifelong conflict between what he aspired to be and the necessities of making a living.
At a later stage there was confusion about the origin of “Desiderata” because of the myth concerning the year 1692 and Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore where the text was used as an inspirational message to the faithful.
Ehrmann had a long term relationship with Bertha Pratt King whom he married shortly before his death. She was the founder of the King Classical School. Most people wouldn’t be aware that Ehrmann did in fact produce ten other works and verses prior to 1938. But for now here are the inspiring words for “Desiderata”.
“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”
