Have Goals – Will Succeed: Part One.
[private][private][private]This Post is in THREE parts because it can be difficult to isolate Goal Setting from other issues such as low Self-Esteem or Self-Confidence or even Depression. Here’s what I mean: Do you think someone depressed or emotionally disturbed is in a fit state to make goal setting decisions? The reply of course is NO.
PART 1
Extensive research has shown that people who regularly set goals are far more likely to be successful then people who don’t. Napoleon Hill, the famous author of the best-selling book ” Think and Grow Rich”, once said that “Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement, and its lack is the stumbling block for ninety eight out of every one hundred people because they never really define their goals and start toward them.”
A study was done to determine the importance of goal setting. College students who had gone on to achieve great success in business were asked to list their habits. The students who had made a habit of setting goals were in the top 3% of earnings in the population!
Goal setting is not difficult to make a beginning with, yet 97% of the population never do it. That means 97 people out of 100! I’m stressing the words positive habits here because they are the result of repetition so that the good habit becomes automatic. By making goal setting a positive habit, you can start putting yourself in the top 3% of the population of successful people. Your goal-setting habit can help you reach any of your goals, regardless of whether they relate to business, your work place, home and family, your personal needs, or relationships etc.
Here are several simple steps towards helping you start your goal-setting habits:
STEP 1 Have a think about where you are going in life right now, and where you would like to be. Clearly define your destinations and paths ie how you are going to get there. Always write them down, and be very specific about your goals. Goals written down have a much higher success rate or conversely those not written down will most likely never happen.
Separate your goals and write each one in large print on colored paper. Stick these in your bedroom or some place where you will see them. Writing in your diary would obviously be a great thing.
STEP 2 Determine what the time line is for reaching your goals; set specific deadlines for each goal. This might be having a vacation in 6 month’s time! It could be organizing an important large event.
STEP 3 Identify any obstacles that may stand in your way. Write them down, list them, and state how you plan to overcome them. These could be money, time off work, travel etc
STEP 4 Make a list of your family, friends, other people and/or organizations which can will help you reach your goals. Close friends at work, other parents at school or child care, etc could be very helpful.
STEP 5 Make sure your goals are sensible and achievable. Don’t set the bar too high. If you do you will fail. I always had trouble with this one because I’m a perfectionist and I had to learn to compromise. One of my Internet Marketing colleagues who now earns 6 figure income, set his first month goal at only $200.00 which I thought was very sensible. The warm & fuzzy feeling you get when achieving any goal, is great motivation.
STEP 6 It seems that many people don’t expect to succeed with anything because they think of themselves as losers. I think that’s a truly sad situation. They will surely need extra help from some of the programs I have planned.
STEP 7 Many people think of goals as chores and hard work. They should think of goals as making their dreams come true, and substitute the word dream for goal.
STEP 8 Live your dream. How this works is you pretend your dream has come true. Suppose you want a new Mercedes car. What you do is dress up, then go down to the Showroom, pretending to be a buyer, and take a test drive. You smell the beautiful leather seats, stroke the wood-grain dash, listen to exquisite hi-fi sound, enjoy the silky smooth ride! Suppose you yearn to own a new home!!! Once again you dress up and drive to a suitable display home village. Taking your time you slowly wander through the exact home you would give anything to own. You absorb all the detailed design, the lovely colors, the furnishings, the beautiful carpet and tiles. It’s almost yours!! Such exercises as these, might seem silly but they have been proven to be very successful.
STEP 9 Only associate with positive minded people who will sweep you up and carry you forward with their enthusiasm. It’s so much easier to set and achieve goals when you are surrounded by kindred spirits.
STEP 10 Mindset. You must have a strong determination to achieve your goals and persevere. If you think it’s all too hard, then it will be. If you think you will fail, then you will fail.
